Coffee Break

At sixty-two years of age I am finally learning to drink coffee.

coffee cup 1I never liked coffee because it was always too hot (It killed the taste buds on my tongue!) and too bitter. There were only two times I had a cup of coffee in my past. Both times, I was in the middle of freezing to death and I needed the warmth in my body. But coffee as a beverage of choice? No way!

I confess that the aroma of coffee has always been appealing. But just as the appearance of cottage cheese is appealing, I can’t stand the taste. (Or maybe with cottage cheese it’s the texture?)

What has prompted me toward drinking coffee is the needed “pick-me-up” that I understand coffee can give. I suppose it is my age but my energy level can really drag in the afternoons.

So I have learned there are a million ways to prepare coffee. Because I cannot yet drink it “black”, I doctor it up with flavoring or Half and Half or sugar or…    After the color is just right I adjust the taste.

Actually, iced coffee tastes pretty good but it seems to lack the traditional nuances of holding a hot cup of coffee in your hands.

How do you like coffee? Maybe I can learn from your coffee history!

  1. I used milk and two teaspoons of sugar for years. Then, in Uganda there was a stretch of time when it was either impossible or very, very costly to obtain milk or sugar. At that point I started drinking it black. I don’t think it took more than two weeks to get to the point where I liked it better that way. So, I’d say black coffee is an acquired taste — but one that can be acquired pretty quickly.

  2. Rick has been drinking coffee for years…I had to acquire a test as an adult and one who worked night shift, but I too have to use cream and sugar. Rick said to tell you he too needs the afternoon pick me up but he goes for the “20 minute” power nap. Or at least that what he tell me! Will continue to prayer for God to lead you and I know He has great things planned for you both but we still miss you and your smiling face. God Bless you!

  3. Craig, my experience with coffee is similar to yours. I started drinking it when I retired around April. Patti loves coffee so I thought it would give us something else in common. :>) I need to doctor it up, too. Another reason is that ‘now’ the research says it is fairly healthy but I guess that could change tomorrow. Good luck on your new phase in life. I am enjoying retirement and the grandkids. Leaving for a cruise Saturday. Yay………

    1. Thanks, Michael! Yes, this new phase of life has some challenges but also some great joys. Our second grandbaby is due in December! Thanks for your coffee tips… who knows what tomorrow’s research will report!? Have fun on your cruise!

  4. As a mama on the run I have figured out the quickest method for most everything…from untying shoes to making a cup of coffee. I like a little sweet and a little flavor. So I like kroger’s Hazelnut creamer (large for less than $3!) and I just pick my cup, pour in a little creamer, then pour in my coffee at a medium quick pace…this naturally stirs it all just right. Many college women I have worked with have taken to this easy, perhaps lazy, method. Works great when you only have one free hand and about 15 seconds to grab a cup on the way out the door! Haha
