Rest Area ahead

Katha and I love to travel to see our kids and grandkids. (Grandbaby number 2 is to be here in December!)

When taking the Interstate highways to Virginia Beach or Lancaster, PA, we very much appreciate the Rest Areas along the way.

Especially if not in a particular hurry, it’s nice to take an occasional break to stretch the legs, visit the necessary room, grab a soda or walk the dog. (If we had a dog.)

rest areaDriving can be intense business…especially if in a “caravan” of 18 wheelers, heavy construction or I-should-have-left-an-hour-earlier speed demons. It sure makes you appreciate the times when there’s lots of space around your car and you can kick back and enjoy the cruise control feature. Even then, it is nice to see the approaching sign that reads Rest Area Next Right.

Life can also be intense business…especially if in a “caravan” of days where nothing seems to go right or circumstances are hard to deal with. Thank the Lord that He has provided the occasional Rest Area!

Of course, Rest Areas aren’t meant to be final destinations. You never hear of someone say, “This year we are going to spend a few days at the Rest Area on I-81 near Ironto.” At a Rest Area there is no lodging, restaurants or attractions. It is intended as a place for a brief respite before resuming the trip. Only items for refreshing.

God’s Rest Areas are similar. Some times of rest are longer than others (think weekend get-away vs. job loss) but none are intended to be a long term destination…only a time of refreshing until getting back on the “road” of life.

At this time in my life while I am jobless and waiting for the next thing, I choose to see this as a Rest Area in my life. I won’t be here forever. It’s almost time for the new assignment to begin…and when that happens I won’t have the time to do some of the things I have enjoyed doing over the last few months. But that’s OK! God has been gracious to bless me with the gift of some new, enjoyable experiences during this interim. So…in the words of Willie Nelson…

On the road again! I just can’t wait to get on the road again!
