The Voice

I enjoy watching the TV show, “The Voice”.

People who are talented in singing compete before a national audience which is guided by four celebrity judges. The contest begins with many voices and ends with only one winner. Various genres of music are represented: pop, country, soul, jazz, etc.

It is interesting to hear the judges comments following each performance. Their remarks address vocal technique, stage presence, showmanship…mostly helpful, encouraging things.

Some contestants are allowed to go to the next level of competition and some are let go on the spot. Over a period of several weeks a winner is chosen and he/she is on to a promising entertainment career.

Psalm 29 tells of another “voice”.

We are told this Voice is powerful, majestic, able to break cedar trees, spit flames of fire and shake the wilderness! That’s some incredible voice!

Talk about versatility… not only can it speak in fierce ways but also in gentle blowing. Check out Elijah’s experience  in 1 Kings 19:11-12. Of course, this is God’s voice and He still speaks today. But how?

I am reminded  of four primary ways that God speaks. (1) Through His Word, the Bible…most important of the four ways, (2) Prayer…still small voice inside, (3) Circumstances (Hey, God is still in control of all happenings.), and (4) godly people.

Although He is certainly able to, God does not always speak in big, powerful ways. Sometimes it comes in still, quiet whispers. Sometimes it happens immediately, sometimes there is quite a wait. But it will come! Don’t give up!

On TV, “The Voice” is person-centered. In real life, the “Voice” is God-centered.

Listen…     Do you hear that?
