I always loved watching Nolan Ryan pitch baseball. He was truly one of the greats.
Suppose I was watching a baseball game one day where Nolan Ryan approached me in the stands with this proposition: “Craig, we need you to go in the game and pitch for us. But don’t worry…I will magically superimpose my body in you so it will really be me pitching, not you – but the people will not see me, they will see you.”
Sure enough, I go in the game and though I’ve never pitched in my life I sense Nolan Ryan is somehow inside me doing all the work. I strike out the remaining batters and our team wins the game.
I know…that’s a really weird, crazy thought.
But in reality, that’s sort of how it is to live the Christian life. Only it’s not Nolan Ryan inside, it’s Jesus Christ. He wants to live His life through me. It’s not magic…but it is supernatural. People in the world still see me…but it is really Jesus who is “pitching the game.”
Charles Stanley has said, ” God designed us to function best when we allow Jesus Christ’s divine power to supplant our weakness.” That’s how we function BEST!
God’s Word calls it a mystery: “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
It’s not my job to figure out how this works. It’s just that my job to live this way by faith in my relationship with Christ.
Well, gotta go. The preliminaries are over and I just heard the ump yell, “Play ball!”
