Inanimate enemies

David was blessed as the anointed king of Israel. However, he had his share of enemies. Those who follow after God usually do!

Armies from all over the region wanted to defeat David. Warriors with names like Ammonites, Moabites, Edomites and Amalekites. Nothing would have made them happier than to have David’s head on a silver platter! But David knew that God was his rock, fortress and deliverer.

Like David, I have many enemies, too. But unlike David, my greatest enemies are unseen in their “gorilla” warfare. They lurk around the corners of my soul waiting to pounce on me and mark a great defeat for their kingdom. Their tactics are fierce and their tenacity is ferocious. Their brutality makes Sauron’s Orcs look like child’s play.

The enemies to whom I refer have names like fear, guilt, doubt, regret and indecision. And they have many more in their number who want to see me soundly defeated. I must stay on the lookout for these additional assassins:

lor battleconfusion
revenge
greed
manipulation
distrust
cynicism
apathy
deceit
indifference
impatience
pride
lust
materialism
neglect
worry
jealousy

And there are more still. Their attitude is “take no prisoners” and they want nothing more than to bring me down. In myself, I am too weak to push back their forces. But like the song says,

I am in the King’s army!

When I call upon him, God himself steps in to fight the battles for me. He is my shield and my defense. He is the undefeated One … the source and sustainer of all life.   There is absolutely nothing that he cannot overcome. He cannot lose.

“From the Lord comes deliverance.
May your blessing be on your people.”
Psalm 3:8
