Blind Men and the Elephant

How to define “worship”?

After forty years of leading believers in experiences of worship I realize how much about worship I realIy don’t know. Definitions could include:

“It’s anything that pleases God.”
“It’s recognizing God’s presence and responding to Him.”
“It’s giving Him my all.”
“It’s putting Him first in all I do,”
“It’s singing His praises.”

All of these things are true…but none is totally comprehensive.

I’m reminded of the Indian parable about six blind men who attempted to describe an elephant. After touching it (each touched a different part of the animal) each man had a different description of the pachyderm.

imageBy touching its leg,
an elephant is like a tree.
By touching its tail,
an elephant is like a rope.
By touching its trunk,        an elephant is like a snake.
By touching its ear,
an elephant is like a fan.
By touching its belly.
an elephant is like a wall.
By touching its tusk,
an elephant is like a spear.

Each man’s description was accurate but limited. So is a discussion about worship.

One thing my years of experience have taught me: It is better to DO worship than talk about it.
