“Rubber Necking” is a common term used to describe drivers who pass a wreck on the highway and crane their neck to get a closer look at the devastation. The result can bog down traffic flow or, even worse, cause another accident! The traffic would flow much better if everyone would just stay focused on the road ahead and not be distracted by the activity surrounding the accident.
The first verse of Psalm 1 describes “Rubber Necking” of another kind.
When I become distracted spiritually by taking a closer look at something that is detrimental to my spiritual growth, that is not good. The process outlined in Psalm 1:1 is “walk…stand…sit”. Do you see the progression? I may be walking along in the Christian life staying close to the Lord and enjoying His presence. Then along comes a distraction/temptation…and as I put my attention toward it my “walk” slows to a “stand” and if not dealt with it moves to a “sit”.
Victory in my spiritual life comes through walking…by faith…and staying closely focused on the Lord. Any deviation will result in defeat. However, God’s grace is powerful and He offers forgiveness when I get off track from my walk to stand or sit.
It’s been said,
“You can’t keep a bird from flying over your head
but you can keep it from building a nest in your hair.”
Lord, give me faith to keep walking in strength and courage with You!
