Fasting?

I don’t like going long periods of time without eating. Not fun.

Way back in my Youth Ministry days we had an event called a Planned Famine. It’s purpose was to draw our attention to parts of the world where people were going hungry. It was a 48 hour fast among the youth group. It accomplished its goal!

I realize that God’s Word says fasting should be done “in secret” (Matthew 6:16-18) but let me share from a recent fasting experience.

My body cannot physically handle going 24 hours without nourishment so my fasting these days is actually a “liquid” fast. Throughout the day I drink water and juices as needed. But the purpose of the fast is the most important part.

There is always a reason to fast. But no matter the reason, the result is the same: I grow closer to my Lord and become sort of ultra-sensitive to His Spirit at work in/around me.

The leadership of Regent University has asked us to spend this week in prayer and fasting…asking God to move in a special way on our campus as per Colossians 1:12-19.

So…even though I do not like going hungry, the experience can bring great rewards!
