Heritage vs Legacy

“The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places;
Indeed, my heritage is beautiful to me.” Psalm 16:6

I was raised in Ft. Worth, Texas, by a wonderful Christian family. I was privileged…to attend public school in a great school system…had terrific music opportunities…a loving church family…fantastic friendships. God was good.

My maternal grandfather was a country preacher. On occasion I would go hear him preach at his church, perform a wedding in a country home or help with pastoral counseling. My grandparents were devout Christians as were my parents. I certainly can agree with the above scripture, “My heritage is beautiful to me.”

But my heritage is something I cannot change. The big difference between heritage and legacy is: I cannot control my heritage but I can control the legacy I leave behind. My heritage affects me but I affect my legacy.

Of course, scripture reveals that we, as believers, have an awesome spiritual heritage. Those who have gone before us (Abraham, Jacob, Paul, Timothy, Criswell, Carroll, ten Boom, etc.) did a terrific job of “cutting a path” (so to speak) through the worldly wilderness toward the kingdom of Light.

Yes, because of those who have gone before us, “my heritage is beautiful to me!”
