Sounds of silence

As a kid, I remember a saying that goes like this:

“Sticks and stones may break my bones,sticks-and-stones
but words will never hurt me.”

If only that were true. Words DO hurt because words are important.

Having said that, wordless statements are also powerful. In theatrical terms they are known as subtext: the unspoken thoughts and motives of the characters – what they really think and believe.

In Psalm 19, we learn of God’s subtext and text. We sometimes hear of them as general revelation and specific revelation.

Verses 1-6 deal with God’s “subtext” concerning creation. (There’s a God!)
Verses 7-11 deal with God’s “text” of salvation. (How to know God!)

In our response to God, we find both text and subtext in verse 14:

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.”
