100 Singing Men

Recently,  Katha and I enjoyed the opportunity of hearing a concert by the CenturyMen at a church in Richmond. It was a remarkable time of worship.

Along with a dynamic choral presentation of Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, these men radiated the goodness of the Lord in countenance and spirit.

This men’s choir was started in 1969 as a group of 100 Ministers of Music from Southern Baptist churches all over the country. Their founding director of many years was the incomparable Buryl Red. After Buryl’s passing in 2013, the directing baton was handed to Charles Fuller, the current director – and the CenturyMen force continues.

During the concert it occurred to me how privileged I am to have served as a Minister of Music for over forty years. The years between 1971 (my start) and 2014 (my exit) encompassed a time of rich choral church music that has mainly been lost today to another style of worship music.

As believers, we all know that God’s timing is perfect…and it was no accident that He dropped me into this life at a time when choral church music was at its peak. My love of rich choral music was only eclipsed by my love for Him.

I still love the Lord and am grateful for the “Precious Memories” of years gone by.

As wonderful as the past was, the best is yet to come. If you listen closely, you can hear the heavenly choir singing praise and worship from a brand new type of anthem – the likes of which we’ve never heard!
