5 Things learned from a pre-schooler

Remember that child’s game called “Follow the Leader”?

Not long ago my 3 year old granddaughter, Emmie, said to me, “C’mon, Gramps! Follow me and do what I do!”

Guess what I did. I followed her command!

As I followed her steps, I imitated her swerves and sways, jumps and crawls. (I confess, the crawls were a bit challenging for this 66 year old man!)

The exercise didn’t last long but it accomplished a few things:

  1. It got me outside my “comfort zone”.
  2. I began thinking like her…anticipating the next move.
  3. I didn’t really care what others thought of my antics.
  4. It helped strengthen the bond between the two of us.
  5. I played the game because I love her.

Then it hit me. Spiritually, God asks me to do the same…only He doesn’t call it “Follow the Leader”. He calls it Discipleship. When I follow Him and do what he does it also accomplishes those things:

1. It gets me out side my “comfort zone”.
2. I begin thinking like Him…anticipating the next move.
3. I don’t really care what others may think.
4. It strengthens my bond between the two of us.
5. I do it because I love Him.

I need to thank Emmie for teaching me an important spiritual lesson about Discipleship!
