The Sound of Music

One of the world’s most beloved movies is the film. “The Sound of Music”, starring Julie Andrews. It’s a favorite of many…including yours truly.

You know the story:

Girl goes to the abbey to become a nun…Reverend Mother sends her to be a governess for a family with seven children and no mother…girl falls in love with the father…confused, she returns to the abbey to seek counsel from the Reverend Mother…she returns to the family and marries the father…they form a singing ensemble…they escape the Nazis by traveling over the mountains to safety.

I always thought the title song was just a bit strange: “The hills are alive with the sound of music.” But what  does that mean?

Compare those lyrics by Rodgers and Hammerstein with these:

“Praise the Lord…you mountains and hills.” (Psalm 148:1 & 9)

Most people warmly embrace the movie lyrics with a sort of sentimental acceptance but question how “mountains and hills” can give praise to the Lord.

Well, consider this: Music comes from God. And He can bring praise from whomever and whatever He chooses. God created music and is a singer Himself…

“… He will take great delight in you;
in his love he will no longer rebuke you,
but will rejoice over you with singing.”

I am thankful for the movie’s portrayal of Maria’s religious faith. That faith brought her to the abbey in the first place. Then it directed her to marry into an amazing family. Eventually, it carried her over the mountains to a new life.

One can “climb every mountain, ford every stream, follow every rainbow” or simple trust God to lead.
