Nursery Rhymes

Several years ago I wrote a song during my college days that made it around some other campuses, churches and gatherings. It’s very simple, really, and speaks of the change Christ can make in the lives of ordinary people. While sitting all alone in a dark room of my house in Lockhart, Texas, God dictated:

Old King Cole was a merry old soul, a merry old soul was he. Yet, even with a bowl and a pipe in his hand I bet he had the problems of an ordinary man.

Jack was nimble, yeah, and Jack was quick, but Jack couldn’t make it over the candlestick of life. To him people only had names. Seems he just couldn’t give up playing his games.

What is there that gives my life such meaning?
What is there that makes it all worth while?
It’s found in just one man. His name is Jesus Christ, my friend! Let Him in and you will find life is more than nursery rhymes.

So Little Boy Blue come and blow your horn and thank the Lord for your cows and corn. And Little Miss Muffett would’ve never run away if she’d only asked the Lord for some courage that day.

Mary, Mary quite contrary, how does your garden grow and grow and grow? Silly girl don’t you know its from the Lord that you even have a garden growing there in your yard.

And after Humpty Dumpty went and had his great fall and no one around could fix him up at all, if he’d had his heart with the Lord that day he wouldn’t have had to worry about it any ol’ way, no way.

Mary had a little Lamb, His love is white as snow.

  1. Little Brother, this may be one of my most favorite songs ever! I can remember that summer when you wrote this and how clever the words came together. You definitely have a gift from God who poured this song into you. I love you; I love the song; and I love the Lord for allowing me to be your sister!

  2. Thanks, Cindy, for the encouragement! God has been good to us through the years and I am so grateful for the upbringing you and I had with wonderful parents who ensured a strong spiritual foundation for us. God has built on this foundation for you and me in lots of ways. PTL!
