Dragon’s Tooth

A few year ago I was honored to be asked by my son to take an overnight hike with him to a local peak called Dragon’s Tooth. The hike started with a little slope but over time it increased in difficulty.

As we neared the summit, the trail became more treacherous with jagged boulders and steep incline. I really didn’t know if I could make it to the top. And, of course, we each carried a backpack that contained our hammock for sleeping, MRE (military food pack) for eating, water bottles and a few other essentials for the adventure. At one point Caleb had to carry both of our backpacks!

After finally reaching the top, we hung our hammocks and set up camp. As evening approached, so did the rain clouds. We managed to eat our MRE’s (Yummy!) just before the rain began.

Without a tent, we were sleeping in our hammocks which had caterpillar-like covers. I was thankful for Caleb’s experience with this type thing! Laying in my hammock that night I remember listening to the gentle rain hit my hammock and thinking, “It was such a struggle getting up here…I may not make it down this mountain tomorrow. I may die up here!” Of course I didn’t die up there.

The next morning, the rain cleared and we carefully made our way down DT and enjoyed viewing God’s creation of woods and wildlife along the trail. We arrived home safe and sound.

It was a terrific experience…and a great challenge for this aging father! It was rewarding to “conquer the mountain” but much more rewarding to spend that time with my son. I am thankful for a son who wants to spend time with his father.

Spiritually, that must be how God the Father feels toward his children. He wants His children to WANT to spend time with Him. Doesn’t really matter where or what…just being together.

This is called “worship”.

“Make me know your ways, O Lord. Teach me your paths.” Psalm 25:4
