Game-Changer

My Mamaw and Papaw were country people of west Texas who lived simple lives and touched the hearts of many people. As a country preacher, Papaw was well known around the area and was on a first name basis with the good people of Higginbothem’s and Western Auto.

In addition to preaching in various churches around Cottonwood, he raised hound dogs and sold tombstones along with all the work his farm demanded. As a kid, I was proud to be seen with him around “those parts” when my family would make an occasional visit from the big city. I never thought about if he enjoyed being with me…til now.

Over the past many years in ministry it was not unusual to hear a grandparent brag about his/her grandbaby always including the phrase, “There’s nothing like it!” In my mind I would casually think, “That’s nice.”

Grandkids

I never thought much about grandchildren until I had my own. It’s amazing how taking on the nickname of “Gramps” has changed my life. Having kids is great. Having grandkids is…well, it’s pretty incredible! My whole perspective has changed when I walk through the toy department at WalMart or hear of a sale at the neighborhood toy store. If I’m not careful, I could end up buying way to much stuff for my little Eden! I have experienced what Proverbs 17:6 says, “Grandchildren are the crown of old men.”

It seems the older I get, the more I want to be around family.

God has blessed me immeasurably through my wife, kids and now grandkids. (BTW, our second grandbaby is due this December! I’m just sayin…)

Yes, the Lord has given me precious memories of my Papaw who passed away many years ago. He didn’t have much money to spend on me. In fact, I don’t remember Papaw ever buying me anything. What I remember about him was his “giant” stature, gentle spirit, terrific sense of humor, scratchy face, hard work, love for the Lord and concern for others. The important things of his life were not WHAT he did but WHO he was.

When I’m long gone from this life, I hope Eden and her siblings will have good memories of WHO their Gramps was…even through these days of transition.

“For the Lord is good;
His lovingkindness is everlasting
and His faithfulness to all generations.” Psalm100:5

    1. Diane, God has us in these specific family groups for a reason. To teach us and show us things. I just don’t want to miss what He has for us. Let’s pray for each other’s families!
