Trail Mix

Huck sign Things change over time.

A few miles from where we live in Christiansburg is a place called the Huckleberry Trail.

The Huckleberry Trail is a walking path and nature trail that actually follows the route of the old Huckleberry Crossing railroad that featured a coal-fed steam engine for the first few decades of the twentieth century. It made regular runs between Christiansburg and Blacksburg.

Today the “Huckleberry” is a popular place where health-conscious people and nature lovers enjoy getting some exercise in the great outdoors. Each day it entertains many joggers, walkers, bikers, baby strollers and dogs on leashes.

This afternoon, Katha and I joined the Huckberry enthusiasts by walking a portion of its 6 mile trail. (It was a very small portion!)

For a bit of the trail you can see the remains of the original train track as it parallels the path. The old has been replaced with the new.

Today I couldn’t help but think that one day that old track was brand spankin’ new. It had been built by a bunch of strong, sweaty men and was the wave of the future for transportation around the New River Valley. Many kids had fun getting their pennies “squished” by the wheels of the train and some boys dreamed of growing up to be an engineer (the railroad kind).

But then everything changed. “Progress” has a way of doing that.

I am grateful that, even though circumstances can take bizarre twists, disappointments can abound and our areas of expertise can become antiquated, God never gives the slightest hint of changing! He IS the same yesterday, today and tomorrow!

By the way, what IS a huckleberry?

  1. Various sources said the Huckleberry train was so slow that riders (largely VPII cadets) would get off the moving train, pick huckleberries to eat, and then get back on the train. I know what they are, but haven’t seen any remnants of huckleberry bushes on the trail.
