Nowell

I have always enjoyed the lullaby-like Christmas carol, “The First Noel”.

It was in seminary that I heard the story (legend?) of its meaning.

Originating on the streets of England, the word was spelled “nowell”. During the Christmas season, as people met in passing, one would say, “Jesus is born this day” and the other person would respond, “Now all is well.” Taking the first and last words of the reply gives the two words “now” and “well”. Combined, they are “nowell”. So, when we say or sing the carol we are saying, “Now all is well!” Which is a great truth of the incarnation!

The world will want us to believe that all is NOT well. But as believers, we know better. Real meaning and purpose for life is found in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. He really was the reason for the first “nowell”.

Have a blessed and merry Christmas!
