Stuck in the Snow!

Katha and I enjoy living in the surroundings of Conners Valley Road.

Most of the time, it is quiet and peaceful out here in the woods near Draper. However, the past week presented us with a new wrinkle in the culture of valley living: snow. Although no deeper (and sometimes not as deep) as the snow depths we experienced in Christiansburg, maneuvering through the snow on our hilltop was quite a challenge. VDOT does a good job of scraping main roads but our problem was getting TO the road! Driving down our lengthy driveway was the issue.

I am very grateful the Lord has provided us with a vehicle that features All Wheel Drive. But it is no guarantee that you can go wherever you want whenever you want.

One day last week I was driving up the hill to our house when the snow became too much. At the end of my forward motion, the car got stuck and the tires spun in place. I spent some time trying various speeds, directions and ideas only to find the car stuck in the same position. It was time to call in the reinforcements: the neighbors.

Katha dialed the cell phone and in just a little while help arrived. A young man got behind the steering wheel of my car and soon had my vehicle parked in a secure and safe location at the house. I was amazed at the knowledge and skill he had for the occasion! And then the connection came.

I have often wondered why the Lord has us on this “transitional journey”.

Certainly, I am grateful for two part time jobs and a warm house on bitterly cold days. But why here? And why now? I am sure all that will be revealed in heaven…but for now, the Lord clearly said to me, “Craig, someone in the future is going to face the same type transition you are in now…and will need some “experienced” person to help encourage them along the way. Learn all you can during these days in order to help that someone when the time comes.”

Just like the experienced snow-driver helped me out of a difficult situation, I want to be equipped to help someone else on their “transitional journey.”

And so we continue.

  1. Great insight, Dad. I’m sure it’s still difficult to enjoy the transition, but hopefully it helps knowing that it’s for a redeeming purpose.
