Take that call?

PhoneIn December of 1971 I was “called” into music ministry.

Through the years I have come to understand the call was actually to encourage believers to use their gifts in worship of God. That happened to be in the area of music ministry of local churches.

So…what does it mean to be “called” anyway?

Several years ago I heard this simple definition: To be “called” by God is to sense a divine oughtness. In other words, I sense that God wants me to do this so I OUGHT to accept His assignment.  Of course, God can call a believer to various things: vocation, leadership, missions, short term, long term, etc. The calling can be very dramatic or ordinary. One thing is clear. God’s call will never run contrary to His Word.

One thing I love about my job is that it keeps me under the “umbrella” of God’s call on my life. I still get to encourage believers to use their gifts in worship of God…just in a different setting. Seeking the Lord and surrendering to Him is in itself an act of worship.

Part of preparing for the future depends on what God has called you to do. Are you listening for that call?

Through the years I have enjoyed serving local churches in the areas of music and worship. It has been a great ride! Currently, I have the privilege of serving with the good people of West Hampton Baptist Church in Hampton, Virginia. It is a terrific church family where God is doing a unique and powerful work.
