Did you see that?!

Growing up, one of the first movies I saw at my neighborhood theatre was “The Mask”. No – not the Jim Carrey release from 1994 but the 1961 version starring Paul Stevens, Claudette Nevins, and Bill Walker.

It was a genuine horror film (laughable today) that incorporated the use of 3-D glasses which were given to the movie-goers upon entering the theatre.

Every time the protagonist put on a certain African tribal mask the film went from black and white format to color in 3-D. Because of all the squiggly lines on the screen one could not really see the images properly without wearing the cardboard glasses which had a blue lens and a red lens (which were quite crudely made compared to 3-D glasses of today!)

Without the proper vision one could not understand what was happening.

Compare this concept with what is mentioned in Ephesians 6:12…

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

Again, without the proper vision one can not understand what is happening. It starts with accepting Christ…then a whole new vision is found in what Frank E. Peretti calls this “present darkness”.

Open my eyes, Lord, to your activity/agents around me!

  1. Superb metaphor, sir! It’s almost like common grace is the ability to see and special grace is the gift of the glasses!
