Pottery with a purpose

At our house we have everyday cups and plates that have a few chips here and there. They aren’t expensive and can simply be replaced if needed. I have even purchased a few replacement pieces at local thrift stores.

In our china cabinet we have rather fancy cups and plates that are rarely used. In their pristine condition they are mainly just looked at and saved for special occasions.

One set of plateware is common use. The other set is reserved for significant occasions.

Hmmm… Here is what God’s Word says in Romans 9:21…

Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?”

Makes sense! Because (1) God made us, and (2) God is sovereign, I must not consider it to be “unfair” if more blessings seem to be going in directions other than toward me. As a “pot” (or cracked pot!) I can’t shake my fist at the Potter and say “Why did you make me this way!?”

He has a plan for each person (piece of pottery) and He shaped us as He saw fit…for a reason. Some for special purposes and some for common use.

I am resolved to be satisfied with my position and purpose in the cupboard!
