Faith, Family, Friends

I recently had a co-worker ask, “What keeps you going?” I flippantly answered, “5 Hour Energy!”

Of course, that is a silly response. I corrected my answer by saying it is the people we are helping that keeps me going.

After more thought on this person’s question, I realize the answer is deeper…and can be found in three areas. It is my…

1. FAITH that keeps me going. My purpose in life is from the Lord. He is my rock – my fortress – my deliverer. Without Him, life is meaningless. Every breath I take comes from Him. He is the source of my strength.

2. FAMILY that keeps me growing. I believe God gives us particular family members for a reason. My family unit is a sort of “lab” in which God does shaping and re-shaping of my life. As a plant needs water and sunshine to grow, so God grows me through my family.

3. FRIENDS that keep me glowing. (OK, it may not be the best word to use but it rhymes with the previous two.) Having friends is sort of the “icing on the cake” of life. A person with no friends is a sad person indeed. God did not mean for us to live this life alone. Of course, many friends can be found in church. But also at work, the neighborhood, events, etc.

So, the next time I am asked what keeps me going, I will have a three-fold answer…that has nothing to do with “5 Hour Energy”.

  1. How timely– same thing from Barbara Bush. Her quote was on the back of her funeral service card.
Printed on the back of her memorial card:

“When all the dust is settled and all the crowds are gone, the things that matter are faith, family and friends.”-Barbara Pierce Bush
