8 Lessons from the heart of a musician

All the Psalms are filled with meaningful instruction and encouragement.

David was a flawed man but still had a heart for the Lord. His Psalms (song lyrics) show his intimate relationship with the living God and his complete dependence on Him.

The 25th Psalm happens to me my son’s, Caleb, birthday Psalm. Verse 4 speaks especially “loud” to my soul. However, after a recent meditation on the entire Psalm, here are a 8 lessons that I take to heart:

1. I trust in the Lord. He will not let me be ashamed in my dependence on Him…and He will deal with those who ridicule me.

2. Along my pilgrim journey I must be teachable and humble. Out of His compassion and loving-kindness He will lead me…and I must follow His lead.

3. God has a path for every person which is filled with His loving-kindness and truth.

4. God will teach and lead those who have a holy reverence and respect for Him.

5. My wallet may not abide in prosperity but my soul will.

6. I must depend on God’s grace when I am hungry, angry, lonely or tired.

7. To me, my problems seem to be magnified. To Him, they are small.

8. God is the keeper of my soul until I reach heaven. In this life I will have struggles but in heaven I will have none.

Reading your birthday Psalm is a terrific way to start your day!

  1. It is a tradition that our family has had for several years. The calendar date of your birthday corresponds to that numbered Psalm. For instance, my birthday is April 18 so my “Birthday Psalm” is Psalm 18. It is amazing how God will speak a special word through one’s Birthday Psalm. Put it to the test!
